Next Few months

Hello All,

I am going to step away for the next two months because I need some time to decide my future with this league. We are only six months into the season, and I am already at my breaking point.

I have tried every way possible to communicate, but things continue to fall on deaf ears. I used to think this was something we, as a league, could fix. The truth is, the issue isn’t communication—it’s engagement.

I’ll give a few examples.

As a league, we adopted Oakwood Lake Park. This was never a project I intended to do on my own. I fully understand that everyone has different schedules, commitments, and limitations. What is difficult for me to understand is how many people still don’t realize this is a club project or have never asked how they can help. I am extremely thankful for those who consistently show up and contribute. Without that small group of dedicated members, we would not have accomplished what we have.

I also want to address a rumor I continue to hear—that the township is paying me or providing a budget. That is simply not true. Everything that has been done at Oakwood has come directly out of my own pocket. The league itself has not funded these improvements.

Communication really isn’t the problem. The problem is that too many people simply don’t care enough to read or stay informed.

I had high hopes that the website would improve communication, but those hopes were quickly shattered when I looked at the website traffic and usage metrics.

We created a dedicated GroupMe announcement channel specifically so important information wouldn’t get buried in general conversation. Yet I constantly hear that messages get lost. It makes me wonder if people even realize there are two separate channels—one for league chatter and one for important announcements.

Then we took it a step further with UDisc. It literally tells you the date, time, and cardmates for league rounds. Yet people still reach out asking questions that are already answered in the app.

When I started this league, I had a simple vision. I wanted to create a brotherhood where anyone could compete. Along with that vision came a tremendous amount of work and structure to ensure the league could grow and leave a lasting legacy.

It’s no surprise to me that so many leagues eventually disappear or switch to random draw doubles. Running and maintaining a competitive league with very little support is difficult enough. Trying to do that while also helping maintain a course makes it even harder.

I consider many of you friends, and that’s why I care about this league as much as I do. But lately, I feel more like a doormat than a friend. I get criticized constantly. Everyone seems to have an opinion, but very few people have a solution.

This league has put far more strain on friendships than I ever expected.

People outside the league often ask me why I do it. My response is always the same: because our league is awesome. We have monthly payouts, anyone can win, we have a banquet, player packs, raffles, sponsor support, and a great community. I get excited talking about it, and people tell me they want to join.

Today, though, I started thinking about our current members. I tried to remember the last time I heard something genuinely positive from a league member. Honestly, I couldn’t think of much. What I can remember are the complaints—about layouts, cards, courses, UDisc pairings, the website, stats, GroupMe, and everything else.

Lastly, I want everyone to think about something.

People like to joke and call me a dictator. But ask yourself this: if 90% of the league doesn’t check the website, doesn’t read GroupMe, and doesn’t respond to texts, how exactly do you expect issues to get resolved?

Something needs to change.

I have no problem stepping away if I’m the problem. But I think everyone needs to take a hard look at what they’ve done, what they’ve said, and what they’re willing to contribute to this league moving forward.

This league was never supposed to be about one person, and it shouldn’t become that now.

The reality is that 10% of the membership cannot continue doing 90% of the work.
